Financial Aid Basics - Grants

Grants are a type of aid, which does not need to be repaid, from federal, state, or college sources. They are awarded to students based on financial or academic need. Grants are the foundation of our aid programs ensuring that an economically diverse student population has the opportunity to meet the educational costs at Aims Community College.

Federal Pell Grant (PELL)

This is a need-based federal grant program for students who are seeking their first undergraduate degree. The annual award amount is determined by your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), cost of attendance and enrollments status. Students who establish eligibility will be funded.

2008-2009: Annual award ranges from $400 to $4,731 for students with an EFC between 0 and 4042
2009-2010: Annual awards range from $609 to $5,350 for students with an EFC between 0 and 4617

Initial awards are determined as a result of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are based on full time enrollment. Awards can change if any criteria used to determine your eligibility, such as; major, degree status, satisfactory academic progress, and income or family information changes.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG):

This is a need–based federal grant awarded to students seeking a first undergraduate degree in an eligible program who have exceptional financial need. Priority is given to Pell eligible students who file their FAFSA early. Limited funding is available in this program and is awarded a first come–first served basis.

Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG):

A federal grant program for undergraduates receiving Pell Grants who are U.S. citizens in a degree program and are enrolled full-time in their first or second academic year of study.

First academic year students who have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study, graduated from high school after Jan. 1, 2006, and have not been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program are eligible for an annual award up to $750.

Second academic year students who have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study, graduated from high school after Jan. 1, 2005, and have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the completion of their first year of postsecondary study are eligible for an annual award up to $1300.

Colorado State Grant (CSG):

These state funds are available to Colorado resident undergraduate students with a documented EFC between 0 and 6062. Awards are made after the Pell Grant eligibility is determined. Minimum award is $850 per year.

Colorado Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (CSIG):

This program is a combination of state and federal dollars. Funding is limited and is available to Colorado resident undergraduate students with exceptional documented financial need. Priority is given to Pell eligible students who file their FAFSA early. Limited funding is available in this program and is awarded a first come–first served basis.
