Construction Updates
2008 Updates
October 2008
- Finishing the perimeter landscaping of Ed Beaty Hall by including
xerascaping, retaining walls and other features.
- The development of a pedestrian spine to promote an enjoyable
walking experience through the heart of the campus including
seating areas, lighting, planting beds and other features connecting
the Trades and Industries building with the west side of Ed Beaty
Hall.
- Landscaping improvements to the areas east of Westview and
north of the College Center.
- The project is set to begin in spring of 2009.
College Center Remodel
- The second improvement to the grid will be the replacement
of the back up generator. This improvement consists
of a new set of generators sized to accommodate the new
buildings recently added to the grid. The generators
will be equipped with a system that automatically starts
the generators eight seconds after a power interruption
occurs. The current generator requires manual intervention
for start up so this will be a big improvement towards
maintaining power in the event of an emergency. This project
also includes a generator specifically designated to support
the Data Center in the event of a power outage. This
project is scheduled for completion February of 2009.
There have been a number of questions concerning the remodel
of the College Center. To help provide everyone with
the basic information concerning this project, here is
a short summary:
- The College’s Capital Improvement Master Plan
identifies that planning begins this fiscal year for
the remodel of the College Center to become a “One
Stop Student Services Center”. This supports
the learning centered college by providing one central
location to meet student related services needs.
- The plan will include the relocation of Student Services
from the General Services building to the College Center.
- The selection of an architect and design team to assist
the College with programming and design is in process
and a firm should be selected by early December.
- It is anticipated that construction will begin in July
of 2009 and will occur for a period of one year.
There is a lengthy process of pre-planning before any
construction occurs. In addition to meeting with appropriate
faculty, staff and administrators to develop programming
requirements, a “College Center Relocation Task Force”,
will be created to help develop a schedule of possible
moving times and locations for those who will be temporary
relocated while the construction occurs. Vacating the space
will help insure that student/faculty/staff safety is maintained
during the construction process. It is anticipated that
relocation will begin at the end of spring semester 2009.
The planning process has just begun so I will be working
with administrators to develop the relocation task force
in the near future.
Greeley Campus Power Grid Improvements
- There
are two improvements to the power grid currently underway. The
first improvement will be the installation of varmint protection
on the power pole located to the north of the T&I building. The
power pole at this location provides most of the electricity
to the campus and has experienced a number of interruptions
due to squirrels and other animals making contact with
conductors and causing outages. Although there is no
way to keep animals completely away from this area,
safeguards will be installed to make it more difficult
for animals to make contact with the conductors. This
project will be complete by the end of October.
August 2008
- Design development still in process for the Automotive Technology
Building at Iron Mountain. A preliminary design and site plan
were presented at the last Board of Trustees meeting.
- Berthoud Site Development Plan is in progress with members
of the local community and Senior Management providing input
as to possible programs offered in the future. The Board
of Trustees were presented with an overview and the last BOT
meeting.
- Work will begin soon on the replacement of the College’s
backup generator. The project will consist of installing
a new systems sized to support the new buildings and future growth. A
separate generator will be installed at the General Services
building to provide backup electricity for the data center.
July 2008
- Master Drainage Plan – Work has begun to enlarge the
retention pond located west of the Hansen building and the drainage
swale located at the west property line of the College. Work
is scheduled to be complete in early July.
- Utility Master Plan Phase 1 – Plans are in place to replace
the emergency generator and install a separate generator for
the General Services building. It is anticipated that work
will begin in August and progress until December.
- Design work has started for the new Automotive Technology building
at Iron Mountain.
- Site Planning is underway for the new Berthoud Campus.
