Aims Community College set to go wireless

Submitted on: 12-22-2004

By the end of January, students, faculty and staff at Aims Community College will be able to connect to the Internet using a wireless connection. “This is just another example of Aims’ commitment to providing students with the latest and greatest technology available,” said Gary Bardsley, chief information officer. “Wireless is an increasingly popular form of Internet access for colleges and universities following the model of coffee shops, airports and other gathering places.” Five buildings on the Greeley campus will have wireless access including College Center, Ed Beaty, Westview, Horizon and General Services. Aims campuses in Loveland and Fort Lupton will also have wireless hubs, with the service concentrated in student study and congregation areas. The system will use Wireless Local Area Networks or WLANs to connect to the Internet using IEEE standard 802.11 b/g, which compatible with the most common standard used with laptops. Students, faculty and staff will be able to send e-mails and connect to the Internet and intranet through an encrypted system that maximizes privacy and security. Bardsley said he envisions the technology will allow students to collaborate on classroom assignments in more casual settings like Arty’s Campus Café, the College Center atrium and study lounges across campuses. The project is made possible by funding from a Title III grant and support from the Aims Foundation. Enrollment for the spring semester is underway, and classes start Jan. 10.
