College For Kids celebrates 29 years of educational summer fun

College For Kids at Aims Community College is celebrating 29 years of summer educational fun with a very special curriculum. This year, students entering grades 2 through 7 can take two classes each week for just $150 per week, which includes lunch. Classes run Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Aims Continuing Education Division, 5590 W. 11th St. Courses offered in Week 1 include: LEGOŽ Battle Bots: Using advanced LEGOŽ parts and pieces, students learn to design and build their own motorized battle cars and other vehicles. By using principles of simple and complex machines, gearing, and mechanical advantage, students then try flip, push, or smash their opponent's battle vehicles. Lessons demonstrate the use of mechanical lifts, nets, drills, ramps and more. Art 1 - Fun with Arts and Crafts Students will have an art-filled week in these classes. Over the two-week span, projects will include 3-D sidewalk chalk, dream catchers, blow painting, tie-dying, string painting, X-Ray painting, collage, mural painting, spray paint projects, treasure boxes, tissue paper flowers, salt painting, yarn painting, paper masks, clay masks, popsicle stick crafts, piņatas, finger painting and burlap weaving. Computer Tech 1 - Photoshop/Animation Students will create a portfolio of computer-generated art using Adobe Photoshop. They will also learn photo-editing, painting in Photoshop, coloring sketches and more. Students will also explore Flash to create exciting animated movies using their own artwork to tell a story. Courses offered in Week 2 include: LEGOŽ Vehicle Engineering Using advanced LEGOŽ parts and pieces, this class has students building 13 different vehicles, some of them that haven't even been invented in the real world, yet. Projects include, Adjustable Crane, Bobcat, Flipper Car, Forklift, Inch-worm Car, Motor Cycle, Motorized Wheelchair, Rally (race) Car, Riding Mower, Scissor Car, Space Cruiser, Steamroller, and Submarine. Art 2 - Fun with Arts and Crafts Students will have an art-filled week in these classes. Computer Tech 2 - 3D Game Design Students will plan and create their own 3D game using Sandbox Game Maker. Students will be able to make mazes, RPGs, Save-the-Princess games, and more. When finished they will learn how to promote their game using flyers from Microsoft Publisher. Children will be sent home with a copy of their game on CD for them to enjoy forever.
