“The Dream of China” comes to Greeley

Submitted on: 07-01-2005

Celebrated watercolor expressionist starts exhibit tour at Aims Community College GREELEY—Celebrated for his technique of using watercolor on fabric, Chinese artist Ning Sun will return to Greeley on July 18, exhibiting his work and sharing his knowledge at various venues across Northern Colorado through September. This is Sun’s second visit to Greeley, and he is again sponsored by Greeley-based New Frontier Bank. Sun describes himself as a nostalgic and lyrical watercolor expressionist. “My watercolor is different from other people’s watercolor, first because I put my creative art on fabric,” Sun said through an interpreter. “Secondly, the texture you get on fabric, you can’t get on paper. The texture is enriched and you can represent very broad topics with this technique, similar to what you can do with oil.” Sun’s innovative technique combines Chinese traditional art methods with the broad themes usually depicted in oil painting, and delivers them in watercolor and fabric. He uses wax to process fabric canvases before he begins painting. Then he removes the wax with hot water, creating a texture that is unachievable with standard watercolor techniques. Sun has received numerous awards at national and provincial art exhibitions in China. Ning grew up in Ningbo, a port city near Shanghai, and many of his paintings are inspired from his experiences traveling from the most primitive water villages in southeast China to the mountains in Tibet. Today, he is considered the foremost artist who has successfully applied watercolor on fabrics. Sun’s artwork will be displayed at Aims Community College starting July 18. Sun is enrolled in Aims’ intensive English class during his visit and he’ll get the opportunity to use what he’s learned at a demonstration on Monday, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., and a Meet the Artist event on Wednesday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All events will be held at Aims College Center on the Greeley campus. Sun’s original artwork will be available for purchase, and prints will be for sale, as well. After that, Sun’s exhibit travels to New Frontier Bank from July 28 through Aug. 12, then on to Farr Library from Sept. 1 through Sept. 28. All events at Aims are free and will be held in the College Center on the Greeley campus.
