What is Supplemental Instruction?Supplemental Instruction, also known as SI, is a series of weekly review sessions that are offered to students in identified historically difficult courses each semester.

How do I know if Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered in my course?An SI Leader will be present in your class and will usually announce it on the first day that you meet for the course.

What is an SI Leader?The Supplemental Instruction Leader is a student who has completed the course with the same instructor and received an ‘A’ or a ‘B’ in the class. The SI Leader attends lecture every day and knows what is happening in class. They will then facilitate study groups that are interactive, engaging, and review the information covered in the course.
Since the SI Leader has previously taken the class with the instructor, they are aware of the information that the instructor finds important and how they generally evaluate students.

Do I have to attend Supplemental Instruction to pass my class?SI is voluntary and you are not required by the teacher to attend the SI sessions, but it definitely will help you be more prepared and ready to perform well in the course.

Does my instructor know whether or not I am attending SI? And will s/he give me a better grade if I do?The SI program does not disclose to the instructor whether or not you are attending the SI sessions. You are welcome to share that information with your instructor as you choose to. Since the instructor is not told whether or not you attend, they will not give you a better grade.
Students who do attend SI sessions generally perform better on quizzes, assignments, and tests and therefore receive higher grades than students that do not attend.

What happens in an SI Session?The SI Leader will develop a plan that will encourage you to interact with other students as you review the concepts and content of the class. The SI Leaders will also offer suggestions on how to study, take notes, prepare for tests as well as other skills that will benefit your academic performance. SI Leaders will help you find answers to questions you may not have found in class or your text. They will also provide reviews for upcoming tests.

When do we meet for an SI Session?At the beginning of the semester the SI Leader will survey the class to determine the two most popular times that students intend to be available to attend the SI session. We do our best to accommodate the interests of as many students as possible. These times will be announced in class on a regular basis and the class will be notified if there are any changes.

Where do we meet for an SI SessionGenerally, we try to set up the SI Session in the classroom that your course is in. This is not always possible because classroom space is very busy due to other classes. The SI Session is an informal classroom environment where students interact and work with each other to be successful in the course.

What if I want to be an SI Leader next semester?If you performed well in the course, you are welcome to contact the instructor in your class to indicate that you are interested in being an SI Leader for their section of the class. They will discuss this option with you further.
