Frequently Asked Questions for: Financial Aid - Mini Sessions

  1. What is a mini-session?
  2. Will registering for one or more mini-sessions affect my financial aid?
  3. What if all of my courses are mini-sessions, and I have been awarded and hired for a work-study job?

What is a mini-session?

For the purposes of financial aid, mini-session is the name used to describe a course whose start date occurs two weeks—or later—in a given semester. For example, the first date of the Spring 2009 Semester is
January 12, 2009.

A mini-session, then, would be a class whose start date occurs at least two weeks into the term (i.e., January 26th or beyond).

Will registering for one or more mini-sessions affect my financial aid?

IF you are registered for a combination of courses (for example, registered both for a course that is not a mini-session and for a course that is a mini-session),

THEN, provided your financial aid award has been made, your aid will be paid to your student tuition account at the beginning of the semester.

If you do not begin attendance in your mini-session course OR if the mini-session course is canceled, the enrollment status for which your financial aid was paid to your student tuition account will be adjusted. This adjustment can result in a decrease to your aid amount and may require that you repay monies to Aims.

[NOTE: IF you are a first-time student having earned fewer than six undergraduate credits and you are borrowing from the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program, THEN your loan funds cannot be paid to your student tuition account until the first 30 calendar days of the full semester have passed.]

IF you are registered for courses that are all mini-sessions, and you have been awarded financial aid,

THEN, a disbursement hold will be placed on your financial aid record and will end approximately four days prior to the start date of your first scheduled class.

Example
For a student who is registered for 12.0 credits, and all of his/her courses are mini-sessions.
- Two of the four mini-sessions courses (6.0 credits total) begin on February 10, 2009.
- Two of the four mini-sessions courses (6.0 credits total) begin on March 23, 2009.

Since the student’s first scheduled course begins on February 10th, and since the disbursement hold on the
student’s account will end approximately four days prior to the start date of the student’s first scheduled class,
his/her financial aid for spring semester would pay to his/her student tuition account on February 6th.
Additionally, should the student’s financial aid award exceed the amount the student owes Aims for tuition and
fees, a refund check will be available for the student to pick up from the Cashier’s Office on February 10th—the
start date of the student’s earliest starting class.

[NOTE: IF the student is a first-time student having earned fewer than six undergraduate credits, and the
student is borrowing from the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program, THEN the loan funds cannot be paid to the
student tuition account until the first 30 calendar days of the full semester have passed.]

What if all of my courses are mini-sessions, and I have been awarded and hired for a work-study job?

IF you are enrolled for at least six credits for the semester, and you have completed all required payroll paperwork, and your supervisor has received notice from the Financial Aid Office that you have completed all requirements,
THEN you are eligible to begin your employment—even if your courses start later in the semester.

[Note: Your enrollment will be monitored regularly. IF your enrollment status should drop below six credit hours, THEN you will no longer be eligible to work through the Work Study Program.]
