Submitted on: 08-04-2009

Aims Community College is launching a new environmental construction program this fall with a two-class certificate in Green/Sustainable Building. The curriculum includes Renewable Energy Construction (ENY 153) and Green & Sustainable Buildings (ENY 205).

In the Renewable Energy class, students will be introduced to solar construction techniques, terminology and materials. The Green & Sustainable Buildings course will cover topics such as zero net building, passive thermal architecture, super insulation, and renewable energy sources for heating, cooling and electrical power. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED criteria will also be studied.
"This is where the industry is going," said Department Chair John Mangin. "Sustainable building is not just environmental, it's economical, too."

Renewable Energy Construction will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Green & Sustainable Buildings is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Students can register now. Fall semester runs Aug. 24 through Dec. 11. For more information, follow the link below or contact John Mangin at john.mangin@aims.edu or (970) 339-6413.
