About Sociology

Sociology is social science that is guided by the basic understanding that our lives are affected by our ‘place’ (geographic, but also class, race/ethnicity, individual experiences, etc.)  in the world.  It is the study of human social life and the interdependent social institutions that influence those human groups.  The study of sociology is vast and ranges from researching relationships in family units, to the connective tissue, or disconnect, that sex, race, and ethnicity may provide, to exploring remote cultures.   Overall, sociologists try to discover how and why social patterns change.  Specialties within sociology include criminal justice, cultural sociology, family studies, race/ethnic relations, education, and popular culture.  Mother and Child
