What is CPAT?
Aims Community College, in cooperation with the Front Range Fire Consortium, will offer CPAT testing. Aims Community College has a limited CPAT license through the IAFF.
The job of a firefighter is one of the most physically demanding jobs in North America. It requires high levels of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance. This test is physically demanding and requires that you be physically fit to be successful. This candidate physical ability test (CPAT) consists of eight separate events that require you to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. This test was developed to allow fire departments to obtain pools of trainable candidates who are physically able to perform essential job tasks at fire scenes.
CPAT standards require that each candidate have the opportunity to attend at least two (2) orientation sessions and two (2) timed practice runs using actual CPAT apparatus and completing the entire course. A candidate may waive all of the aforementioned program components and be eligible to participate in a CPAT test. However, candidates choosing to waive any of orientations or timed practice runs must sign a waiver acknowledging that the orientation and practice program was made available and that the candidate is voluntarily and knowingly waiving their right to participate in the orientation and/or practice program.
