In High School?

Get to know your guidance counselor early on

Counselors are a tremendous resource, giving students sound information and recommendations for a well-planned path through high school to college and beyond. Following are some general guidelines. More detailed information is available at this website: http://www.collegeincolorado.org.

Grade 9/Freshman Year

  • Investigate career paths
  • Research college options (certificate programs, career and transfer degrees)
  • Determine appropriate class selections
  • Begin tracking and recording high school accomplishments (grade reports, awards/honors, volunteer service, etc.)
  • Sign up for the College Opportunity Fund (COF)
  • Take campus tours

Grade 10/Sophomore Year

  • Investigate Advanced Placement (AP) courses
  • Take college classes while in high school
  • Take the PSAT in October as practice for ACT, SAT and SAT Subject, and PSAT testing
  • Take, if appropriate, the SAT Subject Test in June

Grade 11/Junior Year

  • Enroll in Advanced Placement courses
  • Obtain examination schedules for the PSAT, SAT and SAT Subject Tests, ACT, and AP exams
  • Scheduling interviews with college admissions counselors
  • Tour college campuses

Grade 12/Senior Year

  • Check your transcripts for appropriate credit completion
  • Note college application deadline dates in mind and take action as appropriate.
  • Take SAT and/or ACT tests and have the official scores sent by the testing agency to the schools you are considering
  • Complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarship applications
  • Choose a finalist from among the colleges that have accepted you
  • Take AP exams
  • Notify the finalist institution of your intent to attend and send your nonrefundable deposit
  • Request your high school to send your final transcripts
  • Contact your college for payment amounts and deadlines
