Family Education Right and Privacy Act (FERPA)Student records at Aims are protected by the Family Education Right and Privacy Act, meaning any release of information to anyone but the student is prohibited. High School Students taking dual enrollment classes must sign this Release of Confidential Information form. In compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulation 34 C.F.R. part 99.30, the disclosure of information from a student’s education record requires the parent or eligible student to provide signed and dated written consent before Aims Community College discloses personally identifiable information from the student’s education records, except as provided in section 99.31. Under FERPA, the access rights that parents and legal guardians had in elementary and secondary school are transferred to students, once a student has turned eighteen, OR is attending any post secondary educational institution. This meaning, as a college student, regardless of age, information can only be released to the student. Parents can be given access to specific parts of their son or daughter's records if the student authorizes the permission in writing. A student’s login information to access myAims is very important, not only because it acts as the student’s electronic signature for contractual obligations, but also because it allows the student into myAims to view information protected under this federal law. We welcome parent concern with education, but it is vital to their student development that their login information remains secret to them. If information is needed, the best approach is to ask your son or daughter directly.
