Who We Are

The programs generated during the Greeley Holocaust Memorial Observance week have, in past years, drawn numerous people from our community and some outlying areas.  It is the hope of the Greeley Holocaust Memorial Observances Committee that the values these programs instill across the age spectrum, diverse religious groups, and the general cultural mosaic of our community give members of our community the courage, where it might otherwise be lacking, to counteract hate, bigotry, and prejudice whenever and wherever they encounter it.

Purpose of Observance

The aims and goals of this community activity undertaking are to provide memorial and educational experiences for the citizens of Greeley and surrounding areas concerning the atrocities perpetrated by the NAZIs and their collaborators principally, but not exclusively, against the Jews of Germany and Europe between 1933 and 1945.

This period of Memorial Observances educates and empowers members of our community to view the world through the eyes of others who, while they share our common humanity, may differ from ourselves in lifestyle, religion, ethnicity, language, gender, or race, for example.  Tolerance, if not respect, of others regardless of such differences is essential for community harmony and understanding.

How You Can Help

  • The Holocaust Memorial Observance operates solely on donated moneys from businesses, other non-profit organizations and individuals in the northern Colorado area. These funds are used to pay speakers (directly or in honorariums) transportation and board for speakers.  Another large source of expenditures is publicity including posters, brochures and notices in area newspapers.  The Greeley Holocaust Memorial Observance also hosts an annual essay contest open to students grades 6 through 12.  There are monetary awards given to the top two students in each of three divisions.
  • If you cannot contribute monetarily, you still can help by attending these events!!  Tell your family and friends  and attend the various events. To check the event schedule, go to http://www.aims.edu/holocaust/schedule
  • Volunteer! To volunteer, contact Jonathan Shaw at jonathan.shaw@unco.edu .  You can help by distributing posters and brochures,  handing out programs at events, or reading names at the annual Litany of the Martyrs.
