- Scientific method and understanding science as a process/characteristics of life
- Chemistry and how it relates to living things—atomic structure/bonding/pH/properties of water
- Organic molecules/macromolecules of life and how they are made, function, and are interconnected
- Cell structure and function/differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- Students should be able to identify the different organelles within a cell and be able to describe how each of the organelles functions
- Osmosis and diffusion
- Enzymes/enzyme function/energy
- Cellular metabolism/aerobic respiration
- Photosynthesis
- DNA replication/protein synthesis
- Cell cycle/mitosis
- Meiosis
- Patterns of Inheritance (genetics)
- Population genetics
- Microevolution/macroevolution
- Ecosystem dynamics/flow of energy/biogeochemical cycles
- Taxonomy and the classification of living things
- Origins of life
- General plant biology and reproduction
- Organ systems of vertebrates
