Aims Community College: What is a day in the life as the Executive Director, Marketing
and Communications like for you?
Zac McFarlane: The field of marketing and communications has never been so complex, and exciting, so the day-to-day varies. One day, I’ll work with the web team to strategize search engine optimization, and the next, I’ll work with the communications team to update the public on an initiative like the Welcome Center launch. I’m blessed to work with the type of motivated and driven team the field of marketing and communications typically brings.
ACC: What makes your department the best?
ZM: Each department brings something unique and interesting to the table. I love being a part of the marketing and communications department because, though the field of marketing and communications is evolving quickly, at its core, I believe our purpose is to tell amazing, compelling, honest stories that drive people to action. To spend our time doing that for an organization like Aims, that sits in a very unique position of community service, is incredibly rewarding.
ACC: What makes a student successful?
ZM: The answer most likely varies by student, but in my personal life, I have found that education is what you make of it. Students who bring drive, and inquisitive minds, ultimately grow exponentially throughout their experience. Those who don’t may skate by and pass, but ultimately miss out on the opportunity to truly transform and grow.
ACC: What is your proudest achievement?
ZM: After high school, I joined the military and am proud of quite a bit that happened in my eight years there. Looking back now, though, I realize I didn’t go to college out of high school primarily because I didn’t believe I was smart enough to succeed. To have conquered that fear, first my earning an associate’s degree, then a bachelor’s, then a master’s, is something I feel a great sense of accomplishment in. And I remain incredibly grateful to those who encouraged and supported me along the way.
ACC: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
ZM: With three young boys, I spend quite a bit of time watching them play sports, fishing, and brainwashing them into being Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, and Rams fans (it’s going well!). Hiking, playing softball, writing, and reading whenever I can.
ACC: Best thing about being the Executive Director, Marketing and Communications?
ZM: I get to spend my days with an amazing team, as we work to find creative ways to tell the amazing story of Aims Community College.
