How do I become a firefighter?
Becoming a firefighter through Aims is a multiple step process. Be sure to contact
us and speak to an advisor who can help you along the way.
- Apply to Aims Community College
- Apply for Financial Aid (if applicable)
Remember to apply early for more opportunities to qualify for grants, loans and work
study opportunities. We also recommend checking out the long list of scholarships Aims offers to see what you may qualify for.
- Train for and pass the CPAT
The CPAT is an agility test that replicates the physical demands needed to succeed
in the fire service. This is a national standardized test/course.
- Complete the Fire Academy*
At the end of the semester long academy, a state proctor comes in and delivers both
a written and practical exam.

At the end of the semester long academy, a state proctor comes in and delivers a practical

I'm a firefighter
After passing the state exams you can now be hired as a firefighter, but we encourage
you to finish your associates degree in order to be hired faster and/or work toward
an officer position in the future.
