Register, Add, Drop & Withdraw FAQ

This page provides answers to common questions students and parents might have about registering for classes as well as adding, dropping, and withdrawing from classes at Aims. Click on the links below to view the questions and answers for other student enrollment and records-related topics.

Adding classes must be done within the first 7 percent of the course. For full-term fall and spring courses, this is generally five days into the semester, and for summer it is generally just three days into the semester. Short courses and late-starting courses may have their own deadlines. Dropping classes must be done within the first 15 percent of the course. Tuition and fees are refunded and no academic record will be generated for classes dropped within this time line.

After the 7 percent date has passed, adding or registration may be done on an exception basis only if space is available and the instructor has given signed permission to enroll. Any class dropped after the 15 percent deadline will become a withdrawal and will generate a “W” grade on the student's record. There are no refunds for withdrawing from a course. The “W” grade does not affect your GPA, but failure to finish any class can affect the student's financial aid. Students may withdraw from classes through 75 percent of the class. A returning student is one who is enrolled in classes the semester prior to registration. If you take a semester off (except summer) you are considered a new student for registration dates. Returning students can register one week before open registration to provide students close to graduation the first choice of classes.

You can drop a class either in person or online during the first 15 percent of the class. A dropped class results in a refund, doesn't show up on your transcript and doesn't impact your GPA. After the drop period, and until 75 percent of the class is complete, you may withdraw from a class. You may withdraw either in person or online. A withdrawn class does not result in a refund and will result in a grade of "W", but the grade doesn't impact your GPA.

If a class is closed, or requires instructor permission, you need to contact the instructor for online permission or to have the instructor sign an add/drop form. If the instructor gives you online permission, you may go online to register. If the instructor signs your add/drop form, you will need to take it to the Student Enrollment Office for processing.
 

You may check your schedule on-line anytime. Remember to print a copy of your schedule to assure its accuracy before classes begin and before major deadlines.
