Personal Philosophy on Advising
Personal Philosophy of Advising: I see every student as a success story in progress.
With proper support and advising, I believe all students are capable of achieving impressive levels of
skill mastery, personal growth, and intellectual maturity. Yet each student comes
to embody these outcomes differently. Effective advising -- like effective teaching -- starts with understanding each student’s unique challenges and strengths, and proceeds with frequent check-ins and communication. The most meaningful changes students experience on the path to a degree or certificate are largely self-activated and self-realized, especially when they connect with resources and seek the company of other learners.

TRiO program where she prepared low-income and first-generation middle and high school
students for college. She is currently working towards her Master of Arts in Genre
Fiction through Western Colorado University.
Personal Philosophy of Advising
“Take seriously the experience of others.” My high school philosophy teacher left
this phrase on the whiteboard every day of senior year, and it has stuck with me ever
since. I acknowledge that my students come from incredibly varied walks of life and
came to Aims with the common purpose of furthering their education. I am here to meet
them where they are at and support them toward reaching their goals, whatever that
may be.

root of who Monie is and she is thrilled to be a part of the Aims educational community.
Personal Philosophy of Advising
As a lifelong learner and career educator, I value the educational process and the
opportunities education provides. I believe the role of education in a student’s life
should be holistic – incorporating learning in all facets of the student’s personal,
professional and academic lives. As an advisor, my goal is to partner with each student
to maximize their efforts in pursuit of their goals; thus, I only consider myself successful
when my students are successful.

Educational/Professional Background
Margaret, an Illinois native, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education
from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. After three years of teaching the
language arts to 7th- and 8th-grade junior high school students, she moved from Illinois to Colorado and, eventually,
became employed at Aims. The bulk of her career here has been in student recruiting,
but she is now part of the academic advising team. The students, staff and faculty
who make up Aims are what she loves most!
Personal Philosophy on Advising
I believe that higher education has a culture. And within that culture lies the sub-culture of Aims. Each of these cultures is replete with customs,
policies and procedures, along with a general “feel.” I believe that my role is to
welcome each student to the culture of higher education and at Aims specifically.
I also act as a guide and mentor as each student traverses these new worlds. While
my advisees are learning about and adapting to these cultures, I will travel alongside
them as a companion on their journeys of self-discovery and personal growth.

Aims, Hayley is thrilled to be working directly with students and giving them the
support they need to be successful.
Personal Philosophy on Advising
I have found that often the simplest remark can make a world of difference to someone
who needed to hear it. I view advising as opening doors that the students must choose
to go through. I’m here to support students in finding their own way and help them
succeed in whatever that means for them. If I can help students see things from a
different perspective that broadens their possibilities and opens their eyes to something
within them, I’ve succeeded.

Personal Philosophy on Advising
“An excellent advisor does for students’ entire education what the excellent teacher
does for a course; helps them order the pieces, put them together to make a coherent
whole, so that the student experiences the curriculum not as a checklist of discrete,
isolate pieces but instead as a unity, a composition of interrelated parts with multiple
connections and relationships” (Marc Lowenstein, 2006).

an education is the greatest gift a person can receive and a life-long endeavor.
"Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no
enemy can alienate, no despot can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction,
in solitude a solace, and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue,
it gives, at once, grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid
slave, a reasoning savage".
