Esmeralda Estevez September Member of the Month

Every month LULAC will select a member that has demonstrated leadership in our club. The month of September we are honoring Esmeralda Estevez. She has stepped in and created designs for our shirts, recruited a new advisor to our club, and is contributing to our meetings with new ideas. Esmeralda has shown that she is willing to put in the time to create LULAC as a place for everyone.
I have asked Esmeralda why she joined LULAC and this is what she said:
“I joined LULAC because I believe that the power of advocating and community engagement can create meaningful change. I know that LULAC's mission is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, and civil rights of the Latino community, and that deeply resonates with me. I wanted to be part of a network that not only uplifts but also empowers individuals to lead and make a difference. Through my involvement, I hope to contribute to initiatives that promote equity and civic participation. I'm especially passionate about mentoring others and helping build pathways to leadership and opportunity. I am committed to helping strengthen our community by fostering inclusion, raising awareness, and promoting action.”
What degree are you pursuing here at Aims Community College and what are your goals after?
“At AIMS, I am pursuing an Associate's in Business Administration. After graduation, I hope to transfer to UNC and work towards a bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in CIS.”
Who has inspired you to go to college?
“I think my biggest inspiration has always just been my family and my son. I've always wanted to make sure that my mom won't have to work forever. I want to show my sisters that no matter how hard life gets, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. But mostly I want to give my son and me a better life, a life we deserve.”
Can you share something about yourself?
“I lived through hunger, poverty, and discrimination in Mexico and the USA. In some places I wasn't Mexican enough, in some others I wasn't American enough. I walk to school every morning, ate moldy bread when there was nothing else to eat. I've had to pick up my life and start over again twice. I started college not even knowing how the school system worked here in the US, and to be where I am today, I am just extremely proud. I know the little me would be so happy to know we are halfway there, and she hopefully never has to go through it again. Being part of LULAC gives me the sense of belonging, knowing that there is a place for people like me, wherever I go.”
