Academic Standards

Aims Community College supports the success of all students. The Academic Standards Policy outlines what is expected of students and what support they can expect from Aims to help them reach their academic goals while enrolled here and beyond.

Academic Standards Policy

To remain in academic good standing, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher must be maintained. Academic good standing is required to be eligible to receive a degree or certificate. Students who achieve less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on academic probation as a warning that their academic progress is unsatisfactory.

Once placed on academic probation, it is important to work closely with your advisor to develop a plan to improve academic standing and identify support services and resources prior to registration occurring. The purpose of this requirement is to help students recognize obstacles that have impeded academic success and to identify solutions that will contribute to improved academic performance.

Please note that academic probation differs from financial aid probation. Any concerns regarding financial aid status and eligibility should be directed to the Student Financial Assistance office for further information.

Students on academic probation status who do not demonstrate improvement in the following semesters may be placed on academic suspension. Students who are academically suspended from Aims will need to submit a written appeal for reinstatement, which will be forwarded to the Academic Standards Appeals Committee for review and decision.

The committee will be composed of representatives from faculty, student services and administration. If an appeal is denied, students will be required to sit out a term, reapply for admission and complete an Academic Reentry Plan with a Suspension Advisor at the time of reapplication. A full explanation of the appeal process will be made available to students placed on academic suspension.

If you are experiencing academic difficulties, you are urged to take immediate action to improve your academic performance to avoid academic probation. In addition to requesting assistance from your instructor or advisor, you may also get help from a variety of academic resources available to students on the Greeley Campus and at Loveland, Fort Lupton and Windsor.

At Aims, we are very interested in your success. Please use the resources available to you to achieve your educational goals. Questions or inquiries about the Academic Standards Policy may be referred to Records office by calling (970) 339-6404 or emailing records@aims.edu.

Probation allows students who fall below the expected academic standards at Aims to make a plan to get back on the path to degree achievement.

First-term academic probation occurs when a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 for the first time during any term. The cumulative GPA is computed using all Aims classes numbered 100 level or above. Students on academic probation are expected to complete the online academic probation survey and submit, before registering for classes. Be sure to follow the directions in the survey to reach out to your Academic Advisor to discuss registration and next steps.

If your cumulative GPA is below a 2.0 but your term GPA is a 2.0 or higher, at the end of the next term, you will continue on probation. If your cumulative GPA and your term GPA are below a 2.0, you will move to Academic Suspension.

An academic suspension results when a student on academic probation (cumulative GPA below 2.00) does not show progress toward good academic standing (term GPA below 2.00).

Students placed on Academic Suspension will receive an email from the Registrar notifying them of their Academic Suspension status and a registration hold will be placed on their record. Students enrolled for future semesters will have their classes dropped.

Students may appeal Academic Suspension if they are able to document that extenuating circumstances exist. These circumstances include factors beyond the student’s control (e.g., family emergency, serious illness, death in family, etc.).

Review the Guidelines for Writing your Academic Suspension Appeal before submitting an Academic Suspension Appeal Form.

If the appeal is approved, the student must meet with a Suspension Advisor to develop a Suspension Re-Entry Plan before being allowed to register.
