Creating Accessible Digital Forms

If you create digital forms as part of your work at Aims, it's important to know how to make them accessible.

Aims prioritizes using Formstack, which has some built-in accessibility features, to create digital forms. Some employees also use Google Forms.

If you don't have Formstack access to create a form, you can submit a ticket to Marcom to create one.

Some Best Practices for Making Forms Accessible

Make sure any forms you create follow a logical order and are easy to understand and use.

  • Check that the form software you're using allows for keyboard-accessible forms, which allow users to navigate using a keyboard.
  • Add clear instructions to form fields, such as "First and Last Name" as a text instruction for a "Name" field.
  • Many forms use an asterisk (*) to indicate a required field, but not everyone may know this distinction. Add additional instructions, such as the word "required" in parentheses after a question, so people using screen readers will know not to try and skip that question.
  • Make sure any images on a form have alternative text added, and any video or audio content on a form page has captions or transcripts.
