Medical Billing and Coding CertificateRequirements

The Medical Billing and Coding Certificate program includes ten courses and goes into greater depth than short-term online programs. You’ll study billing, coding, medical terminology, law and ethics, and office financial management courses.

Certificate Requirements

  • Introduces students to customer service theory and techniques specifically in the healthcare arena. This course will discuss therapeutic communication, conflict resolution and negotiation, as well as employee/employer relations. Exploration of diverse populations and cultural sensitivity will be addressed. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Introduces student to the study and application medico-legal concepts in medical careers. This course seeks to establish a foundation for ethical behavior and decision making in health professions. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Provides an in-depth study of the structure of medical terms with emphasis on using and combining common prefixes, roots and suffixes. This course includes terms related to major body systems, oncology, and psychiatry as well as clinical laboratory and diagnostic procedures, and imaging, and provides accepted pronunciation of terms and relative use in the healthcare setting. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Covers the practical uses of accounts and records with emphasis on accounting principles and analysis for use in a medical office. This course introduces outpatient coding with an ultimate goal to present a clear picture of medical procedures and services performed, such as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, correlating the diagnosis, symptom, complaint or condition, and International Classifications of Diseases (ICD) codes, thus establishing the medical necessity required for third-party reimbursement.   • Introduces outpatient coding services performed (CPT codes) Current Procedural Terminology correlating the diagnosis or signs & symptoms (ICD codes) International Classification of Diseases, establishing medical necessity required for third-party reimbursement.  Department approval is required. Course is not repeatable for credit.

    MOT 1050 and MOT 1060 with grades of "C" or better.

  • Teaches coding concepts using the CPT coding system for insurance claims. The course will introduce the CMS (centers for Medicare/Medicaid services) 1500 form. HCPCS (healthcare common procedure coding system) coding and modifiers concepts discussed as applicable.  Course is not repeatable for credit.

    Prerequisite: MOT 1060 with a grade of "C" or better, may be taken concurrently.

  • Teaches coding concepts using the ICD (international classification of disease) coding system for insurance claims.  Course is not repeatable for credit.

    MOT 1050 with a grade of "C" or better, may be taken concurrently.

  • Employs techniques to analyze information from medical records and code it for insurance purposes. Level I & II and ICD (international classification of disease) coding will be utilized to create medical necessity for services.  Course is not repeatable for credit.

    MOT 1040 with a grade of "C" or better, may be taken concurrently.

  • Prepares the student to code correctly to optimize reimbursements for a full range of medical services by applying data to claim forms using official coding guidelines to eliminate insurance fraud and abuse.  Course is not repeatable for credit.
