Professional Background

Sumiko earned her M.A. in Japanese Studies from Osaka University and taught Japanese in Hong Kong for eight years before moving to Colorado. She taught Japanese at several universities in Colorado, including the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Currently, she teaches Japanese at Aims as well as UNC.

Personal Interests

Sumiko’s research interests include second language acquisition, motivation, community engagement, and Japanese as a foreign language pedagogy. She enjoys hiking and camping whenever she has time.
