Aircraft Maintenance TechnicianRequirements

Begin your journey to building a career repairing and maintaining aircraft with this Aircraft Maintenance Technician Associate Degree. Gain technical and mechanical skills and confidence with hands-on training from instructors with real-world experience while learning essential teamwork, communication, decision-making and deductive reasoning skills employers seek.

To succeed in this career, you need to be comfortable with:

  • Working in a hangar and outside, with up to 25% scheduled time traveling
  • Exposure to noise and hazards associated with aircraft maintenance
  • Standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping for extended periods
  • Lifting 75 pounds and using a ladder and a lift

This degree program offers daytime and evening schedule options:

  • Days: Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Evenings: Monday - Thursday, 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.

How to get started

Step 1 – Apply

  • Apply to Aims Community College
  • Select Pre-Aviation Maintenance Technology AAS Pre-Major as your intended major.
  • Apply for Financial Aid. It is recommended that you do. 

Step 2 – Are you a VA or Transfer Student

  • If you are a VA Student, submit your DD214 and Certificate of Eligibility to the Financial Aid Office.
  • If you are a transfer student, please have your previous institution send an official transcript to Aims. Learn more on the Transfer Information webpage.
  • If you are not a VA or Transfer Student, go to step 3.

Step 3 - ACCUPLACER Test

Required Accuplacer Scores

To complete your application, you must upload scores from both of the following Accuplacer assessments:

  • Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QRAS) – Minimum score: 230
  • Writing – Minimum score: 240

Make sure your score report includes both sections before submitting your application.

Step 4 - Complete the Aircraft Maintenance Technician Application
 

  • Complete the Aircraft Maintenance Technician Application
    • This is different than the main Aims application you’ve already completed.
  • Applications must be completed no later than:
    • Fall Term: First Friday of April
    • Spring Term: First Friday of October
    • Summer Term: Aims does not accept new Aircraft Maintenance Technician students for the Summer Term.

Step 5 - Advising Appointment

  • Combines the basic theories of communication with public speech performance skills. Emphasis is on speech preparation, organization, support, audience analysis, and delivery. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Develops skills one can apply to a variety of technical documents. Focuses on principles for organizing, writing, and revising clear, readable documents for industry, business, and government. This is a statewide Guaranteed Transfer course in the GT-CO1 category. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Provides a review of general mathematics, introductory algebra, systems of measurements, and methods of solving problems related to skilled trades and general industrial repair. It is designed for students in the repair industry. Topics may include algebra, geometry, graphs, measurement, and conversion between various systems of measurement. Aviation Courses

  • Prepares student for the Private Pilot Airplane, Single Engine, Land ~ FAA Knowledge Exam. Restricted to Air Traffic Control, General Aviation Pilot, Professional Pilot, or UAS Sciences majors only. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Introduces drawings, blueprints, and schematics for repairing or altering aircraft systems. Topics include symbols and terminology to assess conformity, design, and inspecting systems using these visual tools.​ Differential tuition rates apply.   • Introduces precision measuring instruments and tooling. This course also covers topics in preparation for the National Coalition Certification Centers (NC3) Precision Measuring Certificate.   • Introduces aircraft materials, heat treatment, metalworking, hardware, safety wire techniques, soldering methods, material compatibility, and identification markings. This course includes welding processes and weld inspection, focusing on acceptable and unacceptable welds.​ Differential tuition rates apply. Restricted to Aviation Maintenance Technician majors only. Course is not repeatable for credit.

  • Introduces basic AC and DC electrical theory. Topics include introduction of digital electronics as applied to aircraft systems, capacitive and inductive circuits, solid state and optical electric devices, and preparation for the National Coalition Certification Centers (NC3) basic electricity and multimeters certification. ​Differential tuition rates apply.   • Introduces the causes of corrosion and methods to prevent and treat corrosion in aircraft structures. Topics include methods of inspection, non-destructive testing, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems. ​Differential tuition rates apply.   • Introduces Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Regulations and manufacturer's' publications pertaining to aircraft operation, maintenance, and proper documentation. This course includes guidance through the certification process, limitations, and responsibilities. Differential tuition rates apply.   • Introduces characteristics of various aluminum alloys, the procedures and precautions used when working with them, the selection of appropriate hardware, and the principles of making repairs to aluminum structures.   • ​​Introduces the operation, troubleshooting and repair of aircraft electrical systems with emphasis on alternators, motors, lighting systems and the wiring as well as control and circuit protection devices.
