Aims Sports Physical Clinic Helps Student-Athletes Prepare for the Season While Training Future Healthcare Professionals
The Aims Sports Physical Clinic on Tuesday, July 21, provides low-cost sports physicals while giving Medical Clinical Assistant students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real clinical setting.
Appointments are available from noon to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Allied Health and Sciences Building on the Aims Greeley Campus. Physicals cost $35, and families are encouraged to register early as appointment slots are limited.
Under the supervision of instructors and volunteer physicians, Aims Medical Assisting students help guide patients through the clinical process. Students take vital signs, record measurements, assist with patient flow and documentation, and experience the day-to-day operations of a functioning healthcare environment.
“I am incredibly excited to see our Medical Assisting students step out of the traditional lab and classroom environment and into a fast-paced, real-world setting,” said Dr. Ryan Mayeda, Department Chair and Professor of Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, Billing and Coding, and Health Sciences. “Watching them apply their skills dynamically while interacting with a different patient population, our local high school athletes, is going to be a massive milestone for them.”
Each year, families across Northern Colorado face the challenge of getting sports physicals before the school year. "The inspiration behind the clinic is entirely community- and student-focused,” Mayeda said. “We wanted to provide a dynamic learning experience for our students while also addressing a real need in our community. By hosting this clinic, we seamlessly merge student education with a high-impact community service initiative."
Proceeds from registration fees benefit students through the Aims Foundation, helping fund scholarships and offset the costs of national Medical Assisting certification exams. "The clinic registration fees go right back into supporting our students," Mayeda said. "Every dollar raised helps fund student scholarships and assists with certification exam fees."
Mayeda hopes the clinic removes barriers that could otherwise keep students from participating in sports. “The primary barriers we are breaking down are cost and accessibility,” he said. “By offering low-cost physicals in an efficient clinic setting, we ensure that financial constraints or tight schedules don't keep a student-athlete on the sidelines.”
Families attending the clinic should bring a completed Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form to their appointment.
