How to Make Content Design Choices More Accessible

Accessible fonts

A typeface is a designed set of characters, such as Arial or Times New Roman. A font is a specific typeface setting, such as Arial 14-point bold.

While there is no designated "best" font for accessibility, applying good design principles usually aids in making digital content accessible to most readers:

  • Simple is usually best - using simple, easily-recognized fonts supports readability.
  • Avoid using too many variations of typefaces or fonts in a single document, webpage or presentation.
  • Make sure there is appropriate contrast between the font and background.

See the WebAIM guide to typefaces and fonts to learn more.

Text and typographical layout

Once again, design principles can guide you in ensuring text layout, spacing and placement are accessible.

WebAIM has a helpful guide to text alignment, layout and using white space in designing documents and webpages.
